Types of gear pumps and how they work
What is a gear pump?

Gear pump or gear pump is one of the most important fluid transfer devices in the industry, and hydraulic gear pumps are widely used in devices that require relatively high pressures. Gear pumps are one of the types of positive displacement pumps and one of the most widely used types of hydraulic pumps. The main movement of these pumps is circular and does not go back and forth. The gears of this type of pump are structurally and technologically more complicated than other parts. When these gears start to move, the teeth are separated from each other and suction is created, the fluid is drawn into the tooth and moves from there to the outlet valve. The gear pump has a high suction capability and is capable of pumping fluids with low, medium and high viscosity.

Application of gear pumps

Gear pumps are usually used for pumping oil, paint, resin or food products that have high viscosity. They are also a good choice for applications that require accurate dosing or high pressure output. In addition, in situations where the power supply is irregular, because their output is not under much pressure, gear pumps are considered for use. Types of gear pumps

Gear pumps are divided into two types, external gear pumps and internal gear pumps, according to efficiency and structure.

. External gear pump
One of the types of gear hydraulic pump is the external gear pump. Its structure consists of two gears and a shaft inside a shell. In this pump, with the rotation of one of the gears, the other gear also starts to rotate and a flow of oil is formed in the space between them. At the place where the engagement of the teeth ends, a negative pressure is created in the suction line, which increases its value. Therefore, due to the atmospheric pressure, the fluid enters the suction line and fills the space between the gears. At this point, due to the sealing done, the oil moves towards the outlet channel with high pressure. Therefore, it is very important to control the health of the leak seal in this pump. Also, this external gear pump is produced in 1 axis and two axis types. This division is related to simple and spiral gears. Helical gears are used for flows with slower intensity and have more capacity. Also, small pumps can work between 1750 and 3450 rpm and big pumps can work up to 650 rpm. The external gear pump is more useful than other types of hydraulic pumps. In fact, gear hydraulic pump types have more capacity due to having less tolerance and supporting the main shaft from two directions. For this reason, the use of this pump in hydraulic systems has become common.

Application of external gear pump

External gear pump is used in pumping different materials with different viscosity such as edible oil, solvents and resins, pumping lubricants, pumping water and light oils.

. Internal gear pump

Internal gear hydraulic pump is another type of gear pump whose advantages include less noise. For this reason, this industrial part is used in closed environments. The internal gear pump is mostly used to lubricate the oil pump and charge the pump at a pressure below 1000 psi. The rotational movement of the gears in this type of hydraulic pump causes the oil to move from the source to the chamber between the gears. Therefore, the space between the gears increases and the fluid is drawn to that side. When the chambers reach the pressure valve, the space between the ribs decreases and the oil moves towards the outlet channel with high pressure.

Internal gear pump application

The internal gear pump can pump thin fluids such as oil and thick fluids such as asphalt, chocolate and bitumen. Internal gear pump is used as steering pump and hydraulic pump in road construction machinery. Pumping of all types of oil and fuel such as gasoline, diesel, fuel oil, etc. can be done by an internal gear pump. Pumping all kinds of resins and polymers, alcohols and solvents can be done by internal gear pump. Soap, polyurethane foam, glycol, ink can be pumped by internal gear pump. Also, some things can be observed to increase the lifespan of gear pumps. Always try to keep the oil that enters the pump clean and free of contamination. Also, the pump should not be dry and without oil during operation, because its gears will wear. If your pump starts to leak, fix it as soon as possible. In addition, the unusual vibration of the pump indicates the presence of problems in the circuit, which you should immediately fix. Types of gear hydraulic pumps: Gear shells of oil pumps are usually made of steel or cast iron for different conditions and applications. Also, the material of the bushing used in gear pumps is usually carbon graphite, bronze, ceramic, etc. Also, alloy steel is used to make the shaft and they are completely sealed.

benefits

Types of gear pumps have advantages that have made the use of these pumps popular in the industry. These benefits include: Ease of maintenance and repair Continuous current without pulses High performance speed The ability to rotate on both sides (to empty and fill the tank) Pumping a wide range of fluids with different viscosities Easy repairs Reduce the possibility of cavitation Easy connection with flange and thread Gear pump body material is different according to the application.
